Reel #18 Clip #1. Sara’s Graduation & A Luncheon, 1965
Reel #18 Clip #2. Saturday Steaks Night, 1965
I was released from the Army, in 1963, at the Brooklyn Naval Yard following service in Germany, and I headed immediately to Montana where my high school sweetheart was visiting her parents. We ended up attending U of Minnesota together, though years apart, we were together on campus when JFK was shot. Given all that, a tiny regret still surfaces that I did not stay in NYC, specifically Greenwich Village, to experience the era I had to learn about from books, and movies.
Anyway, before I wrote the above, I was stumped as to what to say … so I asked sister Nancy what she remembered about this clip.
“OK, Let’s see. I would like to forget those glasses I had and wear that weird barbecue apron. I do remember that it was a long walk from the house to the brick patio carrying everything needed for the meal. Also, it looks like Pete was pretty serious about his grilling duty. What struck me the most watching that clip was the similar eye movements of Sara and Dad. Both had a twinkle in their eye and an eyebrow wiggle. Also, Mom waiting for her cue before walking. Ready, action!”

Reel #18 Clip #3. Kurtz Family Visit, 1965
A fantastic capture of Pete entertaining Donna’s (Kurtz) three children during a visit to the Knollwood neighborhood of Hopkins. Watch for daughter Catherine Ann rocking out on the piano with Pete on guitar while Mom gets to hold baby Brian. Then it’s off to ice skating at our popular neighborhood frozen pond with footage that silently captures an afternoon of happy children using their outdoor voices. A stunning shot of Mom still holding baby Brian is the quiet center of the boisterous and joyful activity. A wonderful clip that we’ll try to share one day with Catherine Ann, Kevin, and Brian, as their parents have passed.
